Within this site hive denotes a component-orientated and plugin-based distributed computing framework. It is primarily designed to easily implement distributed software on any challenge domain with the goal to achieve nearly linear scalability. The components provided by plugins can embed widgets in the hive GUI system which comes up with the state-of-the-art Qt 4.3 GUI. Various concepts concerning user interface and communication protocols are derived from the gi-gaia project.

hive is free, open-source software and is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

This site also offers an artificial life simulator called alien (see plugins). It uses the framework to carry out simulation activities to an arbitrary number of threads (on one or even more computers) particularly for genetic algorithms.
